  • The story of Aquatio begins with a single drop of water—simple, pure, and enduring. This drop, both literal and symbolic, shaped every aspect of the hotel’s design and spirit. Inspired by the bronze sculpture “MU765G” by Kengiro Azuma, located at one of the main entrances, the drop becomes a metaphor for life and the natural cycle of water. Its form guided architect Simone Micheli in designing the interiors, lighting, and furnishings, while Cosimo dell’Acqua brought the vision to life in restoring the ancient borgo. Just as water slowly hollows stone, this drop reflects the long history of the Sassi di Matera, shaped by time, erosion, and human ingenuity.

The drop also speaks to the legacy of Matera’s people—resilient and patient—who collected every drop of water in carved cisterns and built communities around these precious reserves. The Latin saying “Gutta cavat lapidem” perfectly captures this spirit: a single drop, over time, can shape even rock.

Aquatio Cave Luxury Hotel & SPA is a refined five-star retreat carved into the ancient Sassi of Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage site and European Capital of Culture 2019. Opened in 2018, the hotel features 35 rooms and suites seamlessly integrated into the tuff rock or constructed in the traditional style with masonry and wooden roofs. These unique spaces, designed by Simone Micheli, blend historical authenticity with modern luxury across 5,000 square meters of elegant indoor and outdoor areas.

Guests can relax in the peaceful private courtyard or enjoy refined regional cuisine at the hotel’s restaurant, “La Dispensa,” where the flavours and colours of Basilicata come to life. Dine under the stars in the heart of Sasso Caveoso for a truly memorable experience.

The hotel offers both bed and breakfast or half-board options, including a generous selection of sweet and savoury items to start the day. For deep relaxation, the 500-square-meter wellness centre, set in ancient cave spaces dating back to the 9th century, invites guests to reconnect with the original essence of the place. Once functional cisterns now house a stunning infinity-edge pool, with massage rooms, beauty cabins, and quiet corners to unwind.

At Aquatio, water is more than an element—it is a symbol of history, transformation, and enduring beauty, returning once more to the place where it has always belonged.
