  • According to early historical information, Castello di Monterone dates from around 1200 and is situated on a hill with panoramic views over the valleys between Assisi and Perugia. This idyllic residence truly is a gem – immersed in the beautiful Umbrian countryside and a treasury of the arts filled with ornate salons and frescos.
Some of these hold signs of the ambitious captains of the late medieval period whilst others were built with the stone walls visible and have ancient fireplaces called “Piceller” that conserve the atmosphere of the castle. Just 3km from the town of Perugia, the castle is thought to have been a guard tower for the prominent San Bevignate Templar church which is just 500m away and well worth visiting for the beautifully preserved 13th Century frescos.

The Capaccioni family that now own Castello di Monterone have lovingly restored the castle into an elegant hotel with comfortable lounges, a relaxing library, bar and contemporary basement restaurant. Guests first enter through the cloistered garden full of Etruscan artefacts and seating areas in the dappled shade. The interiors remain true to the origins of the building and are impeccably maintained. Any modern additions such as the lift to the battlements are unobtrusive – the views from up here are stupendous.

The 18 rooms here (in one of 6 categories) are all named after the story of their individual restoration or a defining characteristic of the room. Décor remains in keeping with the traditional medieval style – think wrought iron beds, textured linen curtains hanging at mullioned windows and antique furniture that conceals the modern requirements of travellers today.

The basement restaurant is surprisingly contemporary – think modern Scandi in style; a complete antithesis to the ancient walls of the castle.  The covered terrace is a particularly nice spot to while away a summer’s evening over a dinner filled with typical Umbrian fare, lots of which comes from the local area.

Out in the gardens on the lower terrace is a small outdoor freshwater swimming pool, sauna and Turkish bath. The adjacent rose garden pays homage to the women of the castle (a ladies garden was typical of medieval castles) with over 20 varieties of the flower. Guests should also remember to request a tour of the castle – the owners stories of its’ renovation are truly captivating.
