Borgo Egnazia is far from an ordinary hotel – it represents a new concept of hospitality inspired by the surrounding Puglian countryside with a contemporary and unique style. The Melpignano family that owns the property has a vision to combine Puglia with luxury, refined hospitality, cultural richness and elite tourism.
This all began in 1996 with Masseria San Domenico, originally the family’s private holiday home which later became “La Masseria” – a 5* leading hotel of the world and the model of luxury hospitality. Throughout, the property was built of local tufo limestone and inspired by Puglian villages and farms, by nature, and by simplicity. The result today is a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, modernity and authenticity, mightiness and simplicity.
Over 190 rooms here are either in the main building which also houses the reception area, restaurants and bar, and the Michelin starred Due Camini restaurant, or in a series of villas surrounding the central piazza. Rooms range from snug double rooms to large villas that when combined can accommodate up to 14 guests. All are swathed in crisp white linen and decorated in a rustic farmhouse style but with all the conveniences demanded by the most discerning of travellers.
All of the eateries across the property offer diverse menus which lean heavily on typical Puglian cuisine yet served in sophisticated ways. Guests are also able to enjoy the upscale atmosphere of the Michelin starred Due Camini. The Bar del Portico offers a signature cocktail of Galliano, pink grapefruit, vodka and mint. The other 3 bars all by the pool and in the piazza serve up chilled drinks late into the evening. Many Italians join the multinational holidaymakers during the summer and there are numerous festivals focussed around food and music during the period.
The impressive Borgo Egnazia spa is set over 2 floors and has even won awards from publications such as Tatler. For over 12s only, a variety of treatments are offered that use ancient local rituals and a locally produced pink salt scrub. It really is a treat for guests who wish to relax and unwind in peaceful calm surroundings that resembles a modern day Roman bath-house.
Outside, there are no less than 4 additional outdoor pools (plus an indoor heated pool too) across the village – one of the outdoor pools being especially family friendly. For the active, there are a huge number of activities including tennis courts, football pitch, cycle hire, go-karting, watersports on the private beach areas, pasta- and pizza-making as well as the spa for pure relaxation.
Borgo Egnazia may be spread out – but the biggest part of the fun is exploring the alleyways and hidden corners that link the different parts of the property.
