Just squeaking into the 19th Century – founded in 1899, the Hotel Lido Palace sits amongst leafy gardens in the heart of Riva del Garda nestled at the foot of the rugged cliffs that surround the north-western corner of Lake Garda.
The pedestrian entrance from the hotel gardens opens directly onto the lakefront promenade – the property could not be any closer to the waters edge and is ideal for a wander around the historic town centre.
Always palatial in its architecture, the hotel was radically transformed by the avant-garde genius of Alberto Cecchetto and the lobby area now juts out from the main building as a museum-like extension with glass ceilings and swanky seating. The glass and metal dining extension is in a similar vein and stretches almost to the lakeshore. A glass walkway runs over the gardens – the restaurants and bar give the illusion of floating above the lake. Within the historic main building, marble columns and high ceilings are juxtaposed with modern art and vivid furnishing. Floor to ceiling windows offer stunning vistas over the gardens and the surrounding lake scenery giving a true inside-outside vibe.
The 42 rooms and suites combine traditional luxury with contemporary living. Chocolate browns and white are the major elements of the colour scheme – with each room having splashes of vivid accent colours – each being unique. Views are over the lush gardens or out over Lake Garda.
There are two restaurants here – Tremani Bistro with its lovely views over Rive del Garda’s craggy surroundings and the more formal Il Re della Bussa which offer superb gourmet cuisine in smart surroundings or the candlelit terrace during summer months. The Bali bar is a luxury spot with a neon-lit bar and terrace with lake views. Light dishes are served here as well as refreshing drinks and signature cocktails.
Cento 11 is the hotel’s wellness area and is a space where nature and the environment combine to offer total relaxation. There are outdoor and indoor (heated) pools with the outdoor one being surrounded by terraces with comfy sunbeds and umbrellas. The air conditioned gym offers cardio equipment and a stretching zone. Yoga is also available. The indoor pool is within the spa centre where the usual spa treatments are available from the extensive menu. There are minimum age restrictions for access to the indoor pool and for spa treatments. Pool towels are available at both pools from the hotel staff.
Just as in years gone by when guests included the likes of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, King Vottiro Emmanuel and Cornelius Vanderbilt, with an austere by somehow irresistible charm and a refined elegance, the Lido Palace is the premier five star property in the Trentino region.
