  • The boutique Castallo dal Pozzo Hotel started life as a 19th Century Neo-Gothic castle built by the wealthy Visconti family.  It remains as impressive now as it was when first constructed – surrounded by immaculate gardens and nestled between the waters of lake Maggiore and the rolling green hills of the surrounding countryside of Northern Italy.  It really is a stunning place to stay.   The whole area is also a golf lover’s paradise with more than 20 courses in the area.

The 46 rooms and suites are spread across three buildings – the original castle, a palazzo hotel and the romantic stable blocks – all perched atop a hill with breathtaking panoramic views over towards Lake Maggiore. The whole property really does feel more akin to a private residence with a 5* luxury hotel. Rooms are decorated with lavish chandeliers, sumptuous fabrics and curtains and fine crockery and glassware. Whichever building the room is in, all are individually designed – some have carpets, others wooden floors. Rooms in the castle may not be as well lit as those in the palazzo or the stables – but this just makes them feel more romantic. Palazzo rooms come with canopied beds and antique furnishings. Windows open to views over the grounds – some also have lake and castle views. Stable rooms are the most spacious and contemporary with crisp linens and modern artwork by a local artist.

There are 3 restaurants – Le Fief is the most upmarket serving traditional Italian dishes. The Dan Garden Lounge offers smaller plates and drinks in the arches below the castle terrace with views over the grounds. La Folia Life has a panoramic lake-view terrace and has a menu of more international dishes. The American Bar is located in the heart of the Palazzo and has a comprehensive drinks and cocktail menu.

In the greenery of the hotel grounds is the hotel swimming pool (open May to September) in it’s privileged position offering privacy to enjoy the sunshine. Around 23 hectares surround the property with flowered avenues, immaculate lawns, large trees and a large pond with carp and ducks. There are numerous wild animals that have made their home in the park – including deer, roe deer and herons. It’s a perfect place for relaxation or exploration on foot or one of the hotels e-bikes that are available for hire. The hotel can also arrange wine-tastings, cookery classes, photography lessons and guided tours of the historic castle.
