The Pousada Forte de Angra do Heroismo is one of just two Pousadas across the Azores.  Located in a military fortress dating back to 1555, the hotel today offers 29 rooms – 22 being in a new guest wing (9 superior with sea views and French balcony on the first floor and 13 standard rooms with shared terrace on the ground floor) and 3 standard, 2 superior and 1 suite in the original governors house.  The property is surrounded by high stone walls and, although mostly ruins, two former sentry towers and a turret of the original fort also remain.

The hilltop location makes the hotel quite peaceful but it remains just a short walk into the centre of Angra do Heroismo and all of the amenities of the Unesco World Heritage site.

The sweeping lawns and stone walls combine with the endless blue of the ocean that surrounds the property gives an ambience of tranquility throughout.  The terrace area is a perfect spot to relax with a good book, or look out to sea in the hope of glimpsing whales or dolphins.  The pool also offers endless sea views.  There is also a very good restaurant specialising in traditional Azorean cuisine which benefits from beautiful sea views.
