  • After almost 20 years outside of the Azores, Joana Damiao returned to her roots in Sao Miguel and converted her family farm into the Senhora da Rosa Tradition and Nature Hotel.  From its original beginnings of orange production, then wine until the blight which affected the whole of Europe in the 19th Century, her ancestors shifted to pineapple cultivation.  Today, the main building retains its original footprint with 35 rooms and suites each with balconies that offer views over the flowers and greenery of the gardens.

    Additions to the original property are 2 garden cabins modelled on the old grain storehouses of 19th Century farms that sit on stilts and have banana-tree protected terraces that are perfect to sit and relax on.  Rooms are all decorated and furnished to combine antique and modern with the natural colours and fabrics evoking the feeling of the islands.

    The hotel offers countless spaces to relax, a paddle tennis court, an outdoor swimming pool on the spa rooftop and a hot water plunge pool that is located in a pineapple greenhouse. The rooftop Musgo spa offers a variety of treatments, sauna and Turkish bath along with a relaxation room, pilates studio (personal trainers and yoga classes are available too) and a small cardio area.

    The hotel is proud of its connection to and respect for the local area. PV cells and solar panels provide the majority of the energy used and the vast majority of the materials used to build the property were sourced locally. Fruit, vegetables, flowers an herbs all flourish in the grounds.

    The hotels restaurant and bar offerings offer classic cocktails and tapas at the rooftop Mirante and a menu at the main Magma restaurant which changes to make the most of seasonal produce from the farm and the surrounding areas
