Just a short journey from the UK, the islands that make up the Channel Islands offer something for everyone. A mild climate, beautiful beaches, dramatic coastlines and an extraordinary wealth of history make Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm a fantastic choice for an island escape. Each island has its own distinct personality, from the sophistication and energy of Jersey to the timeless tranquillity of Sark, while excellent hotels, fine dining and a wealth of outdoor activities make the islands particularly appealing to those looking for something a little more special.
Thousands of years of history have left a remarkable legacy across these islands. Ancient burial sites, medieval castles and historic harbours sit alongside the extraordinary fortifications left by the German Occupation during the Second World War. Jersey’s dramatic coastline is particularly spectacular, with towering cliffs, hidden coves and sweeping beaches providing a constantly changing backdrop, while the island’s capital, St Helier, combines elegant architecture, stylish restaurants and a bustling waterfront.
Guernsey offers a more intimate and quintessentially island experience, with the beautiful harbour town of St Peter Port providing a charming centrepiece. Colourful houses climb the hillside above the harbour, overlooked by the historic Castle Cornet, while beyond the town are some of the Channel Islands’ most dramatic coastal landscapes. Cobo Bay, Vazon and Petit Bot offer beautiful sandy beaches and sheltered coves, while the south coast is renowned for its spectacular cliff paths and panoramic views across the Channel.
Alderney offers a much lesser-known side of the Channel Islands. The island is far from the crowds and there are few tell-tale marks of mass tourism here. Rugged cliffs, secluded beaches and an abundance of wildlife give Alderney an unspoilt character, while historic forts and wartime remains provide fascinating reminders of its strategic past. The island’s compact size makes it particularly easy to explore, with quiet lanes and coastal paths leading to some wonderfully secluded corners.
Sark and Herm provide perhaps the most tranquil experiences of all. Sark is famously free of cars, allowing visitors to explore its lanes and spectacular coastline by bicycle, on foot or by horse-drawn carriage, while the dramatic ridge of La Coupée provides one of the most memorable viewpoints in the islands. Herm, just a short boat journey from Guernsey, is smaller still, with pristine beaches, clear waters and an atmosphere of almost complete tranquillity. Together, these islands offer a rare opportunity to escape the everyday and experience the Channel Islands at their most peaceful and unspoilt.
Jersey’s beaches are among its greatest attractions – from the golden sands of St Brelade’s Bay to the vast sweep of St Ouen’s Bay, there is a remarkable variety of coastline to explore. The island also offers an impressive culinary scene, with fresh seafood and outstanding local produce featuring prominently in restaurants, country inns and elegant hotels. Its gardens, vineyards and historic estates provide a more leisurely side to the island, while the network of coastal paths offers some exceptional walking.
