Standing as the gateway to two continents, Istanbul has some of the world’s most famous landmarks.  For nearly a thousand years the city of Constantinople was the last remaining outpost of the Roman empire until it was finally conquered in 1453.  It was renamed Istanbul in 1923 and today it is once again a major world city

The Hagia Sophia’s massive dome dominates the skyline of the old part of the city – Sultanahmet.  Built by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century AD this is a unique monument. The Blue Mosque is Turkey’s national mosque and is unique in the fact that it is the only mosque in the world with six minarets.  Built in the early 1600′s it is called the Blue Mosque because of the beautiful blue tiles decorating the interior.  Topkapi Palace was the official residence of the Ottoman Sultans from the 15th century to the 19th century.  Now it is home to an impressive display of jewellery, porcelain and costumes.  The Grand Bazaar is one of the largest and oldest markets in the world.  It’s a walled town within itself which you enter through one of the eleven gates and has a wide range of shops, bars and restaurants.  This is the place to stock up on spices, jewellery, ceramics, carpets and antiques.

Grand Bazaar – a “must” on  everybody’s itinerary; one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world housing over 3000 shops, Kapalı Carşı  is more than just a sightseeing spot. Ever since the 15th century, it has been bustling with activity. Every day locals and visitors are haggling to get the best bargains!
