Cappadocia Hotels

Ancient volcanic eruptions and centuries of erosion have given the Cappadocia region of central Turkey one of the most distinctive landscapes in the country, if not the world.

As if plucked from a whimsical fairytale and set down upon the stark Anatolian plains, Cappadocia is a geological oddity of honeycombed hills and towering boulders of otherworldly beauty. The fantastical topography is matched by the human history here. People have long utilised the region's soft stone, seeking shelter underground and leaving the countryside scattered with fascinating cavern architecture.

The Cappadocia region is known for its fairy chimneys (also known as hoodoos) which are tall cone shaped rock formations that dot the landscape, rock-cut dwellings and churches, and breathtaking valleys, making it a bucket list destination for Turkey.

The many towns and villages that make up Cappadocia each have their own unique charm and character. The most famous and popular towns are Goreme, Urgup, and Uchisar. All three make excellent bases for exploring the area. While Cappadocia is not a single city, the region itself offers a diverse range of experiences. Renting a car is the best way to explore Cappadocia. Visitors to the area can explore ancient underground cities, take a hot air balloon ride over the stunning valleys, or even relax in a hammam. Formerly home to a large population of Armenians and Greeks, Cappadocia has a long history of wine production and its semi-arid plateaus host Turkey’s highest vineyards. The region also has some great hikes, and out on the trails the crowds dwindle and total solitude can be discovered.

With hundreds of brightly coloured hot air balloons collectively taking flight over the surreal and spectacular landscapes of Cappadocia, as the sun slowly emerges above the horizon each morning, this unique and magical resort of Turkey is any photographers dream. Add in an ancient wine culture, increasingly sophisticated dining and accommodation options, and a wealth of outdoor activities and this is a destination of a lifetime that could be visited again and again.
