The southern coastline of Portugal is called the Algarve and consists of a long stretch of fabulous sandy beaches, broken up by extraordinary rugged red cliffs and fantastic grottoes. In the northern part of Algarve, the ranges of Espinhaço de Cão, Monchique and Caldeirão shelter the coast from strong winds. This brightly coloured region, with its fig trees, orange groves and almond trees in blossom, is also the most verdant and fertile.

Faro is the capital of the Algarve and has the main airport as well as a large number of monuments: the Cathedral (Romanesque-Gothic origin), Nossa Senhora da Assunção (a Renaissance Convent), Infante Dom Henrique (museum). Also worth visiting are the beautiful churches of São Pedro da Misericórdia and Nossa Senhora do Carmo. We recommend the Roman ruins of Milreu in the suburbs.
